Crazy Time Ahead....

So in case anyone cares...you ain't gonna hear much from me in the next few days. Well, I say that now....but here is the deal. In case you didn't know. Its Mardi Gras time. Today is my last night of chilling at home for a week, and I ain't complain'. Tomorrow my friends Lisa and Mike are landing here in the city. Dinner and drinks will be consumed. Thursday, work and then parades, Friday, work then head over to Tulane for the Bonerama gig at the Quad.....then drinks with some more friends coming to town, then to the Maple Leaf for the final fat Friday gig of Bonerama. Saturday, its parades and a Bonerama gig at Harrahs. Lisa (my sister) also arrives....Sunday Bacchus and craziness. Monday, Cowboy Mouth at Howlin Wolf during the day, Orpheus Ball and Parade that night. Tuesday-St. Anne's parade. There are many more things that will be happining that I am not really planning for.

In the meantime at work I have been working in Accounting in the morning. Starting tomorrow my afternoons will be learning purchasing......no phones for me for at least 2 weeks!!! So very cool!!

All Better...

Phone is fixed....whoo hoo!!

Mardi Gras Madness

Gig for Bonerama on Friday was full of lots of new fans. It was an...interesting crowd to say the least. I almost sold out of CDs....I did start out with a small amount....sold like 12? 14? More than past weekends.....this coming Friday is the Krewe of Oak ball at the Maple Leaf, so its going to get insane there. A good insane. I can't wait.

Saturday we headed out to the parades....we decided to go downtown, where we could watch the parades, then run over and catch the ferry so we could get to the Orpheus Open House. It was damn cold out on Saturday. Too damn cold. For here? Yeah....we froze our asses off, but it was worth it. We got a spot right off Canal on St. Charles. Have never done a parade that close to Canal before. We yelled and screamed for the MAX band....St. Mary, St. Aug and Xavier Prep combined band. The best of the best. This is one of my roomies first Mardi Gras, and she was having a good time. Finally around 2:40, we took off for the ferry. By the time the ferry left our side, Hank and Gayle had had enough of the coldness over in the warehouses of Mardi Gras World. We were instructed to take lots of pictures of float #14 Thunder and Drums as someone's camera ran out of battery juice. (it really didn't but that is a different funnier story for another time) We took lots of pictures and Kristen got to see the floats up close for the first time (our other roomie bailed as she was too cold). We then met up with Hank and Gayle at, I think it was Dry Dock Bar....right across the street from the ferry....were we drank, ate, and laughed for several hours. I can't wait for the ball and the parade and just more general craziness with those guys. Bacchus will be saaaaaassssssssy!!!!

Sunday Kristen and I had a yummy breakfast, then? We went to more parades. Same spot as the day before, but across the street. Carrollton is my fav of the smaller Krewes and they did not disappoint!!! I even was thrown a stuffed bear....in a devil costume....how did that person know????? After the two parades rolled, we high-tailed it into the Quarter and caught some of the Barkus parade. Barkus...is well a parade for the dogs. Really. It was very cute and some of those dogs were adorable. Okay they all were. This parade lasted for like almost 2 hours....we then headed over to Cafe Du Monde.....loaded up on sugary goodness...then home. I got all comfy on the recliner with my blanket and book.....pretty soon Liza and Max (Kristen's cat) settled in my lap and I started to fall asleep....like at 8 at night.....it was the perfect end to a perfect weekend.

I can't describe the feeling of happiness that swept over me when that first parade was seen coming down The Avenue.....it was amazing. Everyone was just having a great time. Next parades roll on Thursday, and I will be there!! I have instructions on where to go stand for Muses, as our downstairs neighbor is riding.....maybe I will get a shoe!!!!

I will post some pics of the floats when I get home, they are all on the home computer.

Phone Saga continues....

Today after work, my roomie and I went to a Radio Shack on Magazine. I started to explain the problem to the guy and he stopped me right away. Radio Shack is not dealing with Verizon anymore. Do ya think the guy at the one at Canal could have maybe mentioned that???? So the guy at Canal starts looking at the warranty....inputing info into the computer. In the end, they could send it out and hopefully Verizon could fix the LCD screen. It would take at least a week. And they arent overly positive it could be fixed. So I would be without a phone for a week. (no land line at the house) He also said, "Don't go to the one on Canal, they are lazy" Yeah figured that out. I did go to one other store, a Verizon store on Magazine, cuz if I got a new phone I need to have my phone #'s transferred over. (again haven't written the #'s down idiot...me) the machine that can do that? It was stolen....right after the hurricane. And they only had one of the pay as you go phones in stock....and it was $179.00.

So...now...I need to figure out if I can if Verizon can even fix the phone. I can't be without it during Mardi Gras.....to many people in town, and for emergency purposes. I could go to one of the main Verizon Stores (the one on Magazine is tiny) where she did confirm they have the transfer number over machines, and possibly get a cheaper phone. Didn't I say this wasn't going to be easy???

So until at least Sunday? If you want to talk to me? And you have my number? You will have to call me.....

So Sad.

I dreamt again that my phone was fixed. Its pathetic really. I mean where are the dreams of my baby daddies?? Matthew M?? George C??? I mean come on.

I almost forgot!!

9 years ago today my sister did something almost unforgivable. She got married to a Montana State Bobcat!!! She can be forgiven for that I suppose. Especially since he is a pretty decent guy. I mean come on, he drove from Phoenix to Seattle, picked up myself and all my crap and drove us down here to NOLA. He lives in a menagarie of animals, and well heck he puts up with my sister. ;) That is a pretty darn cool guy. She could have done worse....really. But she got herself a good one. I personally can't believe that 9 years ago we were in Vegas for the wedding!! It doesn't seem like it was that long ago!!!

So congratulations on making it this far together!! Know that there is lots of good times and bad times ahead, the good will out weigh the bad.

Now, because I am the little sister, its my duty to say, when am I gonna be an Aunt (besides to the furbabies??) :) :) Love you both!!!

Stupid Radio Shack

They won't replace my phone. They said the warranty that I bought does not cover the LCD screen. That is NO WHERE on the paperwork they gave me. NO WHERE. It says "If we can't fix it, we will replace it" The so-called manager wouldn't even speak to me....he said "call the 800 number listed and they will refund the remaining balance of you warranty" Um...then why does it say, take your phone to any Radio Shack. The asshole just didn't want to have to work. He was more content to wander around the store....in fact he had his jacket on, maybe he was trying to leave. Who knows. I yelled alot. Was not happy. Gonna try taking it to a Verizon place now. Stupid ass Radio Shack. Last time I go in there.

Looks like I will not be having my car worked on this weekend...if I need to get a new phone, I need the $$ to do that. Oh well. This is life right?

Holy Good News Batman!!

So someone just came and talked to me here at work....starting tomorrow...I am off the phones for the morning at least. I am moving "on up" literally. I am going upstairs in the AM to learn the ropes on AR. In the beginning of April, the AR lady will be gone for 6 weeks and in that time, I will be doing her job. I don't think this comes with a pay increase, but it doesn't hurt to ask the temp company about it!! :) :) And I won't be having to wait for my breaks!!! Which come to think of it....its past that time.....

This isn't funny anymore

Is it just me that is having a bad year? I was really looking forward to this new year after all the end of 2005 (from end of August on for obvious reasons) sucked royally. Sure there were good moments in there, I can not deny that. This year? It seems just when I start to have some good days, something else happens. Seriously.not.cool. I was feeling good last night, I found someone who is going to change all the fluids in my car, as it needs to be done and could be the cause of some of my car issues. It would be nice to have my car in some what working fashion in the next week. I was doing good, chilled at home read some, worked on my sister's blanket because OMG I have been doing that forever and since she will be here in a week and a half, I want her to be able to take it home with her. I went to bed...all is good. I woke up this morning and did the mini-freak out thing of "I slept through my alarm and its now 9:00 AM and I am in so much trouble" I reach for my clock on the table so I can bring it closer to me so I can see the time. This is NOT my alarm....just a clock. I was half asleep, and I was closer to my nightstand than I thought....which means closer to the edge of the bed then I thought....I sleep on a wood futon. No I didn't fall out of bed, I almost tipped the bed!! I caught the bed before it fully flipped on me. This was the whole bed mind you. I laid there for a moment and thought "what the hell" or something like that. To play it safe, I grabbed my cell phone (which is also my alarm) to look at the time. My cell phone was on the floor, next to the bed, charging. Guess what landed on my phone and cracked the screen??? Yeah the bed. I can't see much on the screen. The phone works, however I can't see the phone numbers. And guess who doesn't have any of the numbers written down??? Guess who kept saying, yeah I need to write these numbers down in case I lose my phone. Yup, brainiac over here. This is a pay as you go phone as I don't trust myself with a normal cell phone. Luckily (for once something goes right!!) when I bought the phone I paid for a 2 year warranty. The warranty ends this coming August. Guess what else??? The receipts and papers I had gotten with the phone??? did get ruined in the flood waters!! No I was smart and left those upstairs and not in the basement. So hopefully, they will replace it. And hopefully they can just transfer the numbers from this phone to a new phone and hopefully it will be the same number. I am fully expecting one of these things not to occur. Oh and the best part about this??? It was only 1:30 AM!!!!!!!!!!! It wasn't 6, it was 1 freaking 30 in the morning. I fell back asleep around 2:30 or so and dreamt that my phone had repaired itself. I kid you not.

One Good Thing

The place I work at is mostly men. So for once in 8 years of reception/admin work, I don't have to deal with the parade of flowers, balloons, chocolates and other VD gifts that come in to a office.

In other news, 12,000 hurricane victims are now being left to fend for themselves. Where are the FEMA trailer parks that were suppose to be all over the city (including the park across the street from my house???) The rental money given to people, well with the rise in rent prices throughout the city, your lucky if you can pay for 1st/last and first month's rent with that. Real lucky. Average rent seems to be have doubled in the past 5 1/2 months, going from resonable to incredibly insane. I know in some areas (Seattle, New York, Chicago, etc) these rents seem cheap or normal. However most of the people that live here are lucky to make more than $9.00 an hour, compared to the going rate in those cities for the same jobs? Is almost criminal. Sorry you lost your house, sorry we took you out of your city (state for some) good luck getting home, sorry you have no job, but we ain't paying anymore. Oh yeah try to overlook the fact that we knew about the levee breeches when it happened. Good luck! I wish there was something more I could do to help. I know that is why I am helping out with the Arabi Wrecking Krewe. To get some people home.

Hotel check-out time arrives for thousands uprooted by storm as FEMA stops paying the bill
For some, loss of aid signals uncertainty
Tuesday, February 14, 2006
By Gwen FilosaStaff writer
Tirrell Turner checked out of a downtown New Orleans hotel Monday, carrying two trash bags filled with his belongings and much more on his mind than the fact that FEMA refused to pay for his room one more night.
"All I did was change my clothes and took a bath here," said Turner, 27, outside the Cotton Exchange Hotel, where he spent the past month. He was headed toward a $60-a-night motel on Airline Drive, to bide time until his apartment is ready March 2. "I was hardly ever here."
Turner, who lost his Gentilly home to the Aug. 29 floodwaters, is a full-time college student, a part-time security guard and one of 12,000 hurricane victims nationwide for whom Monday meant the end of a federally financed warm bed at a hotel. He said he did what FEMA told him to do: He took his $2,000 rental assistance and, after a five-month wait, landed a home in the New Orleans area.
But having done so, FEMA ruled Turner ineligible for further hotel room aid and sent him packing Monday. For the next two weeks, he will burn through his own savings for a room.
After sinking more than $542 million into hotel rooms since Sept. 1, the Federal Emergency Management Agency is dropping the curtain on a program that, at its peak, housed evacuees in 85,000 hotel rooms on a single night after Hurricane Katrina.
About 4,400 families in Louisiana were forced to check out of hotels today, FEMA said. Nationwide, 8,000 households remain in hotels on the government's dime.
"Regardless of when we chose to end this program, it would be painful for many people whose lives have been completely disrupted by this disaster," said Nicol Andrews, a FEMA spokeswoman in Washington, D.C. "It needs to come to an end. It is an encouraging step that people are moving to longer-term housing."
Falling into the safety net
Andrews said FEMA assistance continues to eligible families for up to 18 months and that other programs fill the gaps.
"There is an entire safety net of state, local and other federal programs, and nonprofit organizations, to catch those who aren't eligible for FEMA assistance," Andrews said. "Those volunteer organizations gear up after every disaster."
While many families have found apartments using FEMA rental aid, others headed out Monday for friends or families' spare rooms and couches. For other evacuees, still homeless five months after Katrina struck, Monday was just another tailspin into uncertainty, having been unable to navigate their way into homes, jobs or other staples of stability.
Calling FEMA has been an exercise in patience and futility, several evacuees said Monday.
"I could call them, but all they're going to say is my case is pending," said Keisha Carter, 25, as she left a downtown hotel with three friends, all asked to leave Monday after months living in various hotels.
Carter, who lost her job and Uptown home to the floodwaters, said she has been in limbo since Aug. 29, grappling with rebuilding her life. She is separated from her two young children, who are living in Texas, and on Monday piled into a car with her friends.
"Nobody is going to let us stay long," Carter said. "I don't know why people are worrying about Mardi Gras instead of trying to rebuild somebody's house."
Although Louisiana braced for a homeless crisis by opening emergency shelters, FEMA officials said they have helped find housing for about 88 percent of the 12,000 leaving hotels Monday.
An additional 1,100 families were simply ineligible for FEMA aid, said Libby Turner, head of FEMA's transitional housing unit.
As of Monday evening, about 30 people have been taken to a shelter in Shreveport, FEMA officials said.
Just in case, the activist group Common Ground had dozens of campsite tents boxed up and ready to pitch in the park across from City Hall. "Stop Evicting Hurricane Survivors," their handmade signs read.
Lawsuit continues
A federal judge Monday denied a motion by New Orleans lawyers to postpone the mass check-out, but the successful lawsuit that won evacuees more time in hotels isn't over yet.
On Feb. 23, a hearing in U.S. District Court promises testimony and accusations that FEMA is violating people's rights to disaster aid, activists and lawyers said Monday.
"FEMA seems much more interested in clearing people out of hotels than in providing the required assistance to people in hotels," attorneys Bill Quigley and Tracie Washington wrote in the last-ditch effort to delay the hotel deadline.
One question, Washington said Monday, is whether FEMA's $2,348 checks to evacuees amount to adequate rental assistance in post-Katrina New Orleans.
Howard Godnick, an attorney with the New York law firm that filed the evacuee lawsuit in December, said federal Judge Stanwood Duval, of Houma, may grant further relief to those who remain displaced.
"This is a judge who understands that the problems left in the wake of Hurricane Katrina are still there, particularly in New Orleans, where he lives," Godnick said.
Getting through to FEMA
New Orleans Fine Hotels, which runs 12 hotels citywide that house FEMA hurricane evacuees, said at least 300 rooms emptied Monday due to the FEMA hotel deadline. At the company's Astor Crowne Plaza Hotel on Canal Street, 145 rooms opened up Monday.
"For the most part, people have someplace to go," said Libby Wunsch, spokeswoman for the hotel company. "They have been leaving without incident. For a lot of them, the hotel has been home since the storm."
Desk clerks and other hotel staff members doubled as housing counselors for the evacuees, according to Wunsch. "The staff has been the main source of information for these guests," she said.
In court papers filed by advocates for the evacuees, a hotel executive said FEMA has been less than clear and consistent with requests for help.
"Our hotel staff has found it extremely difficult, and sometimes impossible, to connect with the FEMA toll-free line," said Francis Quinn, sales director for New Orleans Fine Hotels. "Many evacuees receive conflicting and inconsistent information regarding their benefits."
Tirrell Turner said he faxed all his receipts and paperwork to FEMA, asking for a hotel room until he can move into his new place.
FEMA called it double-dipping and ruled him ineligible, sending him to the front desk to check out Monday. Turner said he has enough money to pay for the Jefferson Parish motel, but didn't agree with FEMA that he was on some gravy train.
"I'm good, I can't stress too much about this situation," said Turner. "If I have stress, I want it to come from school and not from FEMA."
Lost in Houston
In Houston, evacuees from New Orleans dealt with various emotions and realities Monday.
"I feel like I'm lost," Carisa White said, walking through a nearly empty Comfort Inn parking lot. "I don't know where to go, where to start."
It was time for her to go, and she had no place to stay. She said she wants to go home, to Mid-City, but the one-way flight back to New Orleans FEMA said it would provide doesn't leave until Wednesday.
White said she's waiting for a trailer, but as of Monday afternoon there was no word on its status.
"It's disgusting," she said. "I been crying all morning."
White said her bank account is already $1,000 overdrawn.
On Monday, Zelalem Heruy made one last call to FEMA, an eleventh-hour attempt for more hotel time at a Comfort Inn, where he has been living since shortly after Hurricane Rita forced him from his Cameron Parish home.
Heruy said he hoped for an extension on his stay at the hotel. After 10 minutes on the phone waiting to be connected and another 15 minutes speaking with a FEMA representative, Heruy hung up the phone, visibly dejected.
Heruy, a former shrimper whose brand-new trawler was destroyed during the storm, said the $17,000 check from FEMA he'd been expecting was lost in the mail after he left a Salvation Army shelter, where he had stayed for a couple of weeks.
"I'll be OK," Heruy said, standing outside of Room 120. "I've seen the worst of the worst. But this is not just financial, it's mental."
Inside another FEMA-paid hotel room in Houston, Elouise Johnson sat down on one of the twin beds and opened the palm-size white Bible she keeps under her pillow at night
"It don't matter what man say," said Johnson, who longs to return to her 9th Ward church. "All the answers are in this Bible."
Johnson said FEMA gave her an extension until March 7 to find housing outside the hotel where she'd been staying.
March 7 is the final cut-off date for the FEMA hotel program.
Until then, Johnson reads over her favorite verses and chapters in the little white Bible. Psalms 22 and 23, 25 and 51 all roll from her tongue with ease.
When her hotel room assistance runs out, Johnson said, she'll let faith lead the way.
"I've already been blessed," she said. "I asked God for one room, one roof over my head, and he provided me with this so far. He took care of me here, and he'll take care of me wherever I end up after I leave here."

I hate VD. (AKA Valentine's Day for those of you who are thinking of something else)

Henceforth known as Black Tuesday. Or Wednesday, or Thursday. Whichever day it falls on. You get the point. That is all.

Why Mark Mullins will have to grovel at my feet when I rule the world!! Part 1.

  • For this and this (early Christmas shopping my ass)

I know some people out there will throughly enjoy.

Weekend in Words

I put up a few pics from this weekend in the last post...and holy darkness on my work computer...I swear I can see them on my computer!! Don't know if its the monitor here, or what. Anyway....I thought I would share my weekend. I know everyone is just waiting anxiously for details right??? Yeah I thought not. ;)

I took Friday off to go to the clinic. One of my roomies said they would give me a ride, on her way to class...so I left a bit later than planned but I am not one to give up a free ride. Turns out I should have. I got there just after 9 AM. They had closed the clinic line for the day. They already had 1500 or so people in line. Apparently they started lining up at 4 AM.....they were going to start taking registration at 6 AM on Saturday morning. So that was my plan. I went home and crashed for a bit. I had gone out on Thursday evening and saw/heard Craig play at Palm Court. So I was tired. I did some fun things like laundry and stare at the TV. I couldn't even concentrate on a book. That has been happening a lot lately. As I was watching the opening ceremonies for the Olympics, I got a call from my mom with some very bad news. It wasn't suprising...but at the same time it was. Of course I thought "what the hell else can go wrong???" About 20 minutes later I had to leave for the Leaf. I know for some people that the last thing they would want to do is go out. However I needed to. I needed the music of the guys to help drown out all bad crap. Some people understand what I am talking about...some don't. It helped that my friends were there, Roger and Elyse. Also the fantastic Kelly Mullins (aka Mrs. Mark Mullins) was there with her sister and she had me giggling. Frenchy was also there for the 2nd weekend in a row painting the guys. Frenchy owns the gallery across the street from the Maple Leaf and the paintings he does is AMAZING!!

Plans to head to the free clinic pretty much vanished. I didn't feel good about going to stand in a line at 4 AM. Considering I left the Maple Leaf at 3:30, it wasn't an option. Also when talking to my mom earlier, she had said that her and my dad would help out with an eye doctor appointment. Plus there is a bit more help out here right now. Hell I may just go sit at the convention center clinic one day. I don't know.

Bed around 4, up at 9:15 to head out with AWK. I took the bus part way to Ingrid's then walked about a mile in the wrong direction before my not awake brain figured out I was going the wrong way. I got there around 11 and away we went. I got to smash the hell out of the walls in the bathroom, that is cool in a sick way. We finished up there pretty early and headed over to Benny Jones' house to continue work there. We finished around 5 or so. A quick trip home, a shower later and we were heading out to the Quarter for Krewe de Vieux. We started on Frenchmens. Saw the whole parade there, and then ran to catch up to the Stompers to hear some more. We ended up catching up with them on Rampart and Canal. Then we got to walk back. Home and sleep followed.

My intention for Sunday was more AWK. However, my body didn't agree with me. Too much work on Saturday. I felt awful but when I talked to my fearless leader, she said not to worry as she had 23 Tulane Law Students and that was enough for what they were doing. I did leave my house at 1:30 to out to Tipintina's for Chris Rose's book signing. I figured I would be home around 3, and just chill for the rest of the evening. Never plan. There was more people than anyone expected. They had to move Chris outside so the music could start....I waited for almost 4 hours. In line at 2:17, out of line at 6:00. We were outside the whole time. And it was cold yesterday. However, I did have fun chatting with everyone around me. I walked back up to the bus stop on Napoleon and St. Charles and waited for over 20 minutes for the bus, continuing to freeze before I said to hell with it and I started to walk. I made it a block from Jefferson before a bus came roaring past....I wasn't at a stop. I ended up walking all the way to the river bend, stopped for food then walked up to Carrollton/Oak St. before waiting for the next bus. Luckily this wait was 5 minutes. I got home around 8, ate my dinner and collapsed. So I walked a LOT this weekend. I mean, a lot. Saturday, Sunday, and this morning? I was in the same postition I fell asleep in....I didn't MOVE.

Bring on the week now. I can take it. I hope.

That "D" word

Over at Zoot's site, she has been talking about the dreaded "d" word. You know, diet. Lacking will power. I hear ya sistah. At the beginning of Jan, I joined ediets.com. I got some vitiamns sent to me (which I have been taking for 3 weeks now) ediets could really work. If I stuck to it. I get a menu for each day including recipes. The 2 weeks I was on it, I lost 5 lbs. It could have been more, if for one week of it, I wasn't all bloated (that TOM) and well if I gave up drinking diet coke and drank more water. Several years ago I weighed ALOT. I mean ALOT. I decided enough was enough and I wasn't happy. I started walking in the mornings before going to work. I would get up a half hour before I normally would and walk for that half hour. At the time I was living in Seattle on Queen Anne. Which meant hills. Lots of hills. I also started watching what I was eating and would eat between 1200-1500 calories a day. Like I said earlier, I have no willpower so this was extremly hard for me to do. If I got a craving for something, like thai food, I would think about it for HOURS. People say drink water, eat a piece of fruit or some veggies. Um yeah, didn't work for me! Still doesn't. Take this past Monday. I was really full when I got home from work. I had a fairly big lunch. I had drank a ton of water. I started thinking about the half of my sandwich left over from lunch. And I wanted it. I wanted it BAD. I made myself lie on my bed and realize how miserable I would be if I ate it. I wasn't hungry and I didn't need to eat it. I am happy to say its still in the fridge. Going back to Seattle, I started to lose weight. I dropped about 20 lbs before I started to venture back to the gym. I had joined the gym across the street from work when I started there. Like 2 years previous and had gone like 10 times. Now not only was the gym across the street from work, but I only lived 3 blocks from work. I really had no excuses. I started just walking on the treadmill, then came classes, weights and pretty soon I was going to spin classes. I loved spin. I would sometimes go to the gym 2 times a day. Before work/at lunch, or at lunch/after work. I found a co-worker that would go with me. I went to the gym 5-6 days a week. I still watched what I was eating, but upped the intake of calories a bit. I was feeling good, and looking good. I will never be a super skinny girl, but for the first time in my life, I felt good about myself. I lost 70 lbs in about a year. Then something happened. I moved. I moved down south. To a city known for some really really really good food and everything is fried. I haven't joined a gym, not in the year and a half I have been here. I have gained back 20 lbs of the 70 I have lost. I feel like I did before I started the big weight loss. Sluggish and gross. I have been walking a bit more, however there aren't that many hills here. I won't get back up that high in weight again and really do need to cut waaaaay back on the food intake (not the beer intake, that's not gonna happen just yet) start my walking. Its going to get real hot here soon, walking will suck. But I will do it. Right?? Right??? Someone said to me right after I moved here "in the winter you get fat on all the food, and in the summer you sweat all the grease out." yeah. well here's to wearing those cute summer dresses that haven't seen the light of day since moving down here. Moderation....allowing a little indulgence from time to time, lots more water, and yes excersising. I can do this. It will give me something positive to focus on right now.

FEMA got something right

They extended the free bus service in Orleans Parish until Nov. Which is great on my ole pocketbook. Even if my car gets fixed I may continue to do the bus until then. Speaking of the car....it starts, I should really drive it around a bit to see if its smoking still a lot. Of course the hood not latching all the way freaks me out as well. I called the Vehicle Registration place in TX and they said that no moves had been made to switch the title of my car into my name. And then they told me to print out a ton of forms, and to send in $2.30 along with copies of paperwork I do have, they will then start the process of changing the title over for me.....and they would have a total on how much that would cost in a few weeks. Um I don't think so. The dealership is suppose to do all this!! If I move quickly through the free clinic tomorrow (they saw over 2000 people yesterday!!) then I may go see one of the legal services and see if I have any legal action over the dealership. I am not big on the whole suing thing....but I don't want to have to deal with the hassle anymore.

Very cool

I just found out that Chris Rose will be signing copies of his book "1 dead in attic" this weekend at Tipitinas. I am so going. The book is composed of the columns that he has written for the TP after the storm. He always seems to just hit it right on the head for me. I am going to totally geek out of course. I have seen him out and about at some shows and I always stand there and go "oh_my_gawd its Chris Rose" Like he is George Clooney or something.

Also....Bonnie Raitt? She is doing 2 concerts this March at House of Blues with 100% of the net proceeds going to help rebuild New Orleans. How freakin cool is that?? Of course it also made me think....hmmmmm who is going to go to these concerts? Mainly NOLA residents.....so we would be shelling out our own $$ to help out our own city.....it seems twisted to me a bit. I am all about helping out anyway possible, boosting the economy whenever I can, helping out with Arabi Wrecking Krewe...but how much are these tickets? I think I am over thinking this one......I hope there is a good crowd both nights.

Okay

Strike is over. Thank god. They should be back to work on Friday. Cool. That means I can take the day off much easier. I just need to tell my immediate supervisor. If I can find him. Then I will go. I really hate taking the day off. Oh well. So be it.

Still Not Sure

So everyone is saying go to the free clinic. However, because of the strike at work....I am not getting a lunch break. They have for the past 2 days brought in lunch and we have all ate at our desks. They can't really afford to have the people that are working, leave for a lunch break. Therefore right now I have an hour of overtime. If I take off Friday (can't leave early on any other days because of said strike) I lose the overtime. Of course it would make up for 2 hours of the day I would miss on Friday....but is that enough??? All the money helps right now since with this temp job I am making $400 less a month then before the storm. If I go on Saturday....I miss helping out with the Arabi Wrecking Krewe because I know I am going to be in long lines. There were several people on my bus this morning going to the clinic....they open at 8 and these people were going to be there at least an hour before. Then I see articles like this one *sigh* I don't want to be a grown-up anymore. I am tired of tried to make decisions with my car, my job, my health, dealing with mold, long lines, tensions, bad drivers, debris. Just everything. If anyone needs me, I will be outside playing in the sun. Some freeze-tag, hide-n-seek, red rover, riding my bike and just plain being a kid again...mmmmmkay???

Advice

As I have stated lately...I am working a temp job. Which means no sick time, and when I take a day off, I don't get paid. However I am considering taking Friday off. Why you ask? Well, right now out at the zoo, this week only through Saturday, there is a clinic set up. You can get your eyes checked, see a dentist and any other doctor....and not have insurance. Its all free. I could wait until Saturday but it would most likely take all day as I am sure there are alot of people who need to wait until that day. I would love to get the chance to see an eye doctor to make sure my retinas don't have a bunch of tears in them (although I am pretty damn sure they do) but they could take care of it....(follow ups are included) and I really should see a dentist. I don't have insurance right now and this could be really my only chance for awhile. I also am going to be spending Saturday with the Arabi Wrecking Krewe. I wouldn't be totally stupid to take a day without pay to go and do this would I?? Of course I have to make sure the girl who relives me for breaks will actually be here, she is out today. I would be dumb not to do this....right?

Why Mark Mullins will One Day Rule the World-Part 3

  • He can play a mean cowbell (there is photo evidence of this at Lisa's site. I can't post pictures right now for some reason)
  • Taxi Services
  • transcripts
  • a sick and twisted sense of humor that I find hysterical.
  • for not making a bet he KNOWS he could have won.
  • speaking spanish....that will come in handy down here right now. ;)
  • Playing Funky Liza (seriously that rocks my world)

Tired

I am tired of being tired. Ever get like that? I have been good the past couple of days, bed by 10. Or earlier (I think on Saturday night it was 9 or 9:30) However...I had been up again on Friday at 6:00 AM and didn't get to bed until, oh I don't know 4....then slept until 8 and got up and did a lot of physical work. So its not like I am a lazy ass (which believe me I totally can be) last night I took it easy, read a lot and watched TV. I woke up this morning feeling like a train ran over me. I think the muscles hurt from the swinging of the hammer on Saturday and I am still feeling the effects of that. Better start feeling better soon, gonna go and do it again both Saturday and Sunday. However, a lot of people have been sick at work, and I can't afford to get sick. A downfall for working as a temp. No sick time. If I don't work for a day, I don't get paid. That bites. I have been really good at taking my vitamins however. I will have to make sure to take some airborne tomorrow.

I need a vaction on some beach. With cocktails brought out to me by a George Clooney look a like....hell it could be George Clooney. That would work too.......

Interesting Read....

Don't Think So

Mike...once again that was if YOU lost....not if I lost. So run naked down Bourbon Street by yourself. I don't have the bail money to get myself out.....

Let's just say it was a "perfect" weekend all around. I say that sarcastically of course. There were some good moments:

  • Bonerama gig at the Leaf. There were some funky sound issues....so it sounded "off" Not enough sousaphone at times. Mark had to use the mute more than once.....not totally electric. Of course there will be a different sound for the next two weeks with two guys gone. Matt and Rick are out of town on another gig....Jason is filling in for Matt and...aw crap can't think of the guys name that is filling in for Rick. I have met him a few times now and I am blanking on his name. It was packed all the way to the merch table even after the set break. Normally its about half the crowd after the break, but not on Friday. It was nice to see so many people having a good time.
  • Arabi Wrecking Krewe work. We gutted 2 rooms on Saturday. It felt good to swing that hammer and get those moldy walls down. We started in on the kitchen at the end of the afternoon, still have 4 rooms left to do. Luckily this Saturday we will have a bunch of student helping out from Tulane...something like 30. We had a fairly decent meal from Red Cross as well. :) :)
  • And well that's about it.

There are some people that gave me some great support this weekend...ya'll know who you are and I thank you. It means a lot.

Today will be interesting at work since half the people here are on strike....standing outside with their signs and everything. We have securtiy here as well. I will have words with any of the guys who attempt to give me a hard time. I can understand reasons for striking most of the time, however right now? In this city? When they should be freakin grateful to even have a job to come too??? I don't think so. They already called one persong a traitor...she isn't part of the union and has a family to take care of. Are they willing to pay people her missing salary to stand outside with them??? I didn't think so. I almost called in today....I really just wanted to hide under the covers all day (not to mention a headache from cheap beer) I still kinda wish I had.

GO SEAHAWKS!!!

I am nervous as all hell. I am so freakin happy to see them in their first ever Superbowl. This has been years and years of frustrations, and now its time. Its going to be a good game. I want it to be a good game. No blow outs by either side....those are boring. I need to start cleaning....we are having people over to watch....I hope we have enough food.

My friend is bringing his camera, on the off chance I throw the tv out the window.

I just found out this morning that the University of Montana Cheer Squad is heading to Las Vegas this weekend for the United Spirit Association’s National College Cheerleading Championships. That makes me feel so old. 2 of my baby cousins are cheerleaders....in college. I still remember holding them as babies....one of them changing her outfits 20 times a day, when she was like FOUR. Yeah....well girls, I hope you have a fantastic trip and that you walk away with top honors. I have no clue what they win or anything. Is it gold plated pom-poms?

Can you guess who my cousins are?? It shouldn't be THAT difficult.

More info about storm

again from nola.com (I told ya'll I was bored!!)

Heavy winds batter metro area; Kenner, Lakeview hard hitElectricity was still out at Louis Armstrong Airport in Kenner this morning, and across the metro area folks were clearing debris after a strong line of storms passed through the area overnight, flattening structures and bringing heavy rain.Trees were down across the area, but particularly hard hit appeared to be Kenner and Lakeview. Crews worked this morning to remove a radio tower that had blown down across Veterans Memorial Boulevard near Fleur de Lis.Many of the structures damaged overnight had been under repair after being flooded during Hurricane Katrina. The airport sustained damage to its Concourse C.Power was lost at the airport around 3 a.m.; the facility was still without power at 11:15 a.m.Fifteen to 18 flights were on hold. They'll be moved to other concourses and depart when power comes back. Damage estimated at $2.5 million but a spokeswoman called it mostly superficial. The damage in Lakeview prompted authorities to close several streets. New Orleans police closed Canal Boulevard between I-610 and Lakeshore Drive and West End Boulevard between Veterans and Robert E. Lee due to fallen trees and light poles.According to an AP report, a line of severe thunderstorms moved across the area around 2:30 a.m. Tim Destri, of the National Weather Service, said it appeared the damage was caused by two tornadoes, one that hit the airport and another that moved into New Orleans. The storm collapsed at least one house in New Orleans' hurricane-ravaged lakefront, police said.

NWS investigating three possible tornadoes that struck area overnightNational Weather Service survey teams are investigating three possible tornadoes in East Jefferson, including one that caused severe damage at Louis Armstrong International Airport in Kenner. Another touched down in old Jefferson near Ochsner Clinic Foundation and then traveled to Lakeview, according to meteorologist Phil Grigsby. That one was reported at 2:45 a.m. and damaged several trailers near the hospital, tearing roofs upward from their base, he said. It proceeded north toward Lakeview, where reports indicate a twister struck around 3 a.m. It was not clear whether the damage was caused by a separate tornado or the same one that originated in Old Jefferson. A weather service observer reported the tornado at the airport at 2:34 a.m. He saw the funnel cloud at the same time substantial damage occurred, according to Grigsby. Four jet bridges along Concourse C were damaged. “One of them was actually thrown or moved into another one by the force of the wind,” Grigsby said. “It was pretty impressive.” A 20-by-8 foot glass window and its metal frame were pulled out of the walkway area of the concourse, he said, and a section of temporary roof was blown away as well. The tornado tracked north across the airport before ascending again, he said. Grigsby noted a fire station in Kenner also was reportedly damaged, but he could not be more specific. As of Thursday morning, 15 to 18 flights were on hold, the airport said. They were to be moved to other concourses and depart when electric service was restored to the facility. Damage was estimated at $2.5 million but a spokeswoman called it mostly superficial. The damage in Lakeview prompted authorities to close several streets. New Orleans police closed Canal Boulevard between I-610 and Lakeshore Drive and West End Boulevard between Veterans and Robert E. Lee due to fallen trees and light poles. Several houses were also flattened. On the West Bank, the storm caused only minor damage, according to police and fire officials. Entergy spokesman Chanel Lagarde said 2,500 customers on the West Bank had outages overnight, and all but about 200 had their electricity restored by 10 a.m. He said those customers remaining without power would have it restored by mid-afternoon.In St. Charles Parish, several barn-type structures were reported damaged in the Bayou Gauche community. There were no injuries. It is not known if those structures were damaged by a tornado or straight line winds.

*Big Eye Roll*

I am all about the smack talking when it comes to big games, I suck at it, but its still fun. Several people know this. Not that I suck but that I talk smack. But to me this is just stupid. It was an innocent comment....fun smack talk if you will that started this. Porter is all about blowing it out of proportion. Chill dude, concentrate on the up-coming game and shut your mouth. Everyone on each team was thinking the same thing, "We are walking away with that trophy"

High winds leave heavy damage in hurricane-hit areas
2/2/2006, 9:29 a.m. CT
By JANET McCONNAUGHEY The Associated Press

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A violent thunderstorm hit the hurricane-ravaged New Orleans area early Thursday, undoing repairs and creating new damage at Louis Armstrong International Airport and in the Lakeview neighborhood still reeling five months after Katrina struck Aug. 29.
"I can't believe this. I cannot believe this. We were hit twice. It's not bad enough we got 11 feet of water," said Maria Kay Chetta, a grants manager for New Orleans' Department of Homeland Security. Her own home was not badly damaged, but two homes across the street were hit hard by Thursday's early morning storm — one had the roof ripped off, the other had heavy damage to its front.
Authorities said at least one hurricane-damaged house collapsed and a radio tower was blown down near a major thoroughfare.
"Don't ever ask the question, `what else could happen?'" said Marcia Paul Leoni, a mortgage banker who was surveying the new damage to her Katrina-flooded home.
She would go no farther than the front porch of her house Thursday morning. Windows had blown out and the building appeared to be leaning. "I've been in the mortgage business for 20 years, I know when something's unsafe," she said.
At Louis Armstrong International Airport in the suburb of Kenner, electricity was knocked out and passengers waited in a dimly lit terminal powered by generators.
Wind ripped away a tarp covering a hole made in a concourse roof by Katrina. It also tore away exhaust venting from another roof and blew it through a concourse window, depositing it at a security checkpoint.
A piece of an extendable jetway used to board passengers was torn off and slammed into another jetway. Motorized runway luggage carts were overturned and several windows were blown out.
"There's more damage to the terminal than I saw during the hurricane," airport spokeswoman Michelle Duffourc said. Preparations were under way to move airline operations from the damaged concourse to other areas.
It was unclear whether the damage was the result of tornados or straight-line winds. By mid-morning, the National Weather Service had not determined whether a tornado had hit. The thunderstorm moved at more than 50 mph across the New Orleans region around 2:30 a.m.

She said a LITTLE rain.

This will be a slightly long and scattered post, I kinda apologize for that. Only kinda because that is the state I am in right now....scattered.

  • I need to thank Lisa, Jay, and Marisa for attempting to save my sanity yesterday. Work put up a firewall to almost all internet sites. I can get to my email and to blogs right now and that is it. Which okay, I can understand. However as I have stated before....they aren't giving me work to do. Yesterday I got maybe a total of an one hour work, spread through out the day. I would work on it as soon as they gave it to me, the longest item taking maybe 20 minutes. Then I just sit here. They don't want me on the internet that much, obviously, no games, I can't read a book. So I sit here. I can't even get wwoz.org to listen to the radio!!! A radio station!! And Thursdays are my favorite day on 'oz. I mentioned to the Manager yesterday, "you HAVE to give me more to do." He said he was working on it, and that he moves slowly but to bear with him. I have been here for an hour and a half already. I have done the 2 things given to me this morning, read my emails, sent a few, and now I sit. Well not techinically, since I am here posting. But after I am done with this?? Its going to be a long day. What will make it even longer is the following:
  • Last night one of my housemates was online looking at tomorrow's (today's) weather, and she said it was going to be 71 with a few thunder showers. Cool...take an umbrella with me in the morning, got it. I settled into bed around 10 and woke up at midnight, I had fallen asleep with the TV still on. I switched it off and curled back up. At around 2:00 AM I woke up for seemingly no reason. I saw a few flashes of lighting, and vaguely remember thinking, here comes the rain. I checked the time off my cell phone and it was 2:15, I closed my eyes and dozed off again. I was woken up again by clap after clap of thunder. The lighting was almost like, I was Jessica Simpson macking out with some new guy. It was paparazzi city. The lighting didn't stop, the thunder didn't stop rumbling, the wind was howling, rain pouring down in sheets. My curtains were blowing out a bit from the windows. I have plastic storm windows and they were buldging out. I got up to use the restroom and thought that the rain sounded louder as I walked to the living room. That was because our french doors had flung open, the inside soaked. All the furniture and everything else out on the balcony was pushed to one side. Liza decided that if I was up that it must be time to eat, so she followed me around meowing for food. I was trying to get her to be quiet so she wouldn't wake my housemates. Yeah like the storm didn't?? She got extra food. I finally fell asleep around 3:45 again as the storm finally moved away from our area. It was incredible. I felt sorry for people living in tents still, the people in FEMA trailers. Our house was shaking. Can you just imagine what it must have been like for people in the FEMA trailers??? Those are made out of tin!! Thin nylon of the tents??? Come on. That could NOT have been a fun morning. I was lucky. For more reasons than one. When my alarm went off at 6:00, I wanted to curse it. I didn't however. We had no power. If I hadn't had my alarm set on my cell phone? I would quite possibly still be asleep. I had to make sure one of my housemates was up when I left. She is the last one to leave the house and we didn't want her to miss classes. So I am sitting here, with no makeup on and I realized after my shower that there was no way to blow dry my hair. I do have to admit I was hoping power was out at work and I did consider for about 5 minutes, not coming to work and telling them I overslept due to no power. I really hope its back up when I get home. I was talking to one of my coworkers and he said a few small tornadoes had touched down. At least that is what he heard.
  • Some little damn bug bit me at some point last night. At the base of my left hand pinky, almost in between the pinky and ring finger, there is a nice big red bump that itches all to hell. I can't stop itching it and it now kinda burns.
  • And I swear to god I just smelled toast. I really hope someone upstairs was making toast and I am not about to have a stroke. ;)

Cool Blog

About my Seahawks....check it out..... http://thesportsjunky.blogspot.com/

on another note...I am sooooo freakin mad right now I could spit nails. I need to get out of here....before I go postal. Anyone in NOLA need some work done?

Is it a good sign....

If the bus driver now knows your name and says he was wondering if he needed to come across the park to make sure I was going to work this morning???

The month of February begins....the only reason I like February? Okay the only 2 reasons? Its a short month and its that much closer to the parades rolling here in New Orleans. There is going to be alot of coverage this year, for the obvious reasons. CNN will be at the Orpheus parade/ball doing some coverage, I promise to be on my bestest behaviour, I cannot however promise that my sister will be. And I will now tell everyone that she will be wearing the same exact dress, and look exactly like me so that I can blame her for everything. That is what little sisters are for right??? Hopefully the coverage that will be happening during the Mardi Gras festivities don't just focus on the Bourbon St. Faternity drunken parties. Mardi Gras is so much more than that. I am really hoping that St. Anne's gets some decent coverage. I have done it 2 years now, starting at the beginning, but never quite making it to the end. St. Anne's is a 2nd line that happens on Mardi Gras day, eventually meeting up with Rex on Canal street then off to Frenchmen's street. This year I will make it the whole way!!!
